The third Wikipedia Academy conference in Israel is to take place at the Auditorium Hall of the Carmel Center in Haifa on Thursday, the 4th of August 2011. The inception in 2001 (in English) of the Wikipedia project and the Wiki technology, revolutionized the concept of Web-content, as well as the perception of what encyclopedic knowledge is and how it is collected, phrased and transmitted. All this led to a social revolution of making knowledge ever more accessible to the general public. The Hebrew-language Wikipedia, established in 2003, has been following these footsteps and brought about the same changes in the Hebrew-speaking arena. The project of Wikipedia has become an international movement aiming at making knowledge and content freely accessible to the general public, while changing the public attitudes vis-à-vis knowledge accessibility, namely alleviation of copyright restrictions, offering content without commercial presentations and free of charge. Wikipedia Academy is a professional conference exploring the integration of Wiki systems and free content in the educational, academic and business surroundings. In 2009 and 2010, the conference was held at the Tel Aviv University. Both events were very successful and widely reported on the local media. Each of the past years' events hosted more than 250 participants who came to hear the talks of about 20 academic researchers. This year's event will take place in Haifa together with the Wikimedia Foundation's annual international conference, Wikimania 2011. Both the local and the international conferences will be held at the Auditorium complex, and they will have a joint opening session, which will include a talk by the guest speaker, Prof. Yochai Benkler from Harvard Law School and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Participants at this year's Wikipedia Academy will have a rare opportunity to meet hundreds of writers, editors and developers from all around the world, who will take part in the international conference.
